The Heidelberg Major Activity Centre and Austin Biomedical Alliance Precinct Specialised Activity Centre Structure Plan was initiated by Banyule City Council in response to the Victorian State Government’s Melbourne 2030 Strategy. Melbourne 2030 includes key objectives to guide change in Activity Centres which have been integrated into the Structure Plan.

The Outcome:

Our Plan aimed to manage growth, enhance liveability and sustainability in the Heidelberg Precinct as well as stimulate local economic and social needs.

We reconciled potential conflicts between land uses, which allow different components to complement one another. More specifically, we provided strategic direction in the plan and detailed recommendations to improve the identity of the public transport and pedestrian needs. Our plan describes a built form that accommodates future growth and strengthens the local community.

Our Structure Plan won the PIA (VIC) 2009 Urban Design Award and received a commendation or Urban Planning Achievement as part of the Heidelberg Project. The judges noted the Structure Plan as “the centrepiece of an ambitious project that integrated and sustained an urban design perspective, responding to local conditions and providing a framework for reconciling and unifying sometimes disparate elements of the activity centre”.
