Latrobe Valley Transit-Centred Precincts

Project details

  • Project: Latrobe Valley Transit-Centred Precincts
  • Location: Moe, Morwell & Traralgon, Victoria
  • Client: Latrobe City Council & Department of Sustainability and Environment
  • Date: 2004
  • The Task:

The Latrobe Valley towns of Moe, Morwell and Traralgon had been selected to jointly form a ‘Transit City’,
part of a state government initiative to create communities that are more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable through close proximity to jobs, shops, services and high quality public transport.

The selection of the three towns reflects their location on the planned Melbourne- Traralgon Regional Fast Rail line and their complementary provision of regional services. Moe and Morwell have suffered from the economic downturn in the region over the last couple of decades, and the Transit City project is seen as an opportunity to direct new public and private investment towards their regeneration.

The Outcome:

We led a multi-disciplinary team in the preparation of Urban Renewal Frameworks and more detailed Masterplans to guide the implementation of the Transit City program in the Latrobe Valley.

Our recommendations seek to create high quality, higher-density (though not high- rise), mixed-use, walkable ‘transit precincts’ around each of the three railway stations, with a focus on opportunities for ‘urban living’. A comprehensive suite of implementation measures that were primarily aimed at stimulating private sector investment.
